EAST HARWICH – A Dennis woman, whose car crashed into a church early Sunday morning, now faces a charge of drunken driving, according to Harwich police. Lauren DeAngelis, 23, will be summonsed to Orleans District Court to face charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, operating negligently so as to endanger and failure to stay within marked lanes following the incident that totaled her car and extensively damaged St. Peter’s Church on Route 137. A preliminary investigation by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Crash Reconstruction Team indicates DeAngelis, who was not wearing her seat belt at the time, was heading south on Route 137 near Field House Lane when her car left the road around 3 am Sunday. It traveled approximately 335 feet striking a couple of cement pylons, passing between a telephone and guy wire, over some brush and hitting a tree before crashing into the basement of the church, according to police. The force of the vehicle bent a lally column and steel I-beam, which was supporting the second floor, according to investigators from the reconstruction team, said Harwich Police Officer Aram Goshgarian. Harwich firefighters arriving at the scene found DeAngelis crawling out of the rubble of the building. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital , where she was treated and released, Goshgarian said.
