Obama’s Uncle Arrested, Facing DUI Charges, President Remains Mum Police have confirmed that they arrested an uncle of US President Barack Obama in Massachusetts last week for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Onyango Obama, 67, entered a not guilty plea on Friday and was being held without bail on a detainer from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way. Police arrested Onyango Obama shortly after 7 pm on Aug. 24 in Framingham after a sports utility vehicle he was driving failed to make a proper stop at an intersection, and then almost collided with an unmarked vehicle that was being driven by a police officer. Police have said Onyango Obama, who’s originally from Kenya, is the half-brother of the President’s late father. The Associated Press reported that in a court document, ICE said the accused had an earlier deportation or removal order. It is not immediately clear what Onyango Obama’s immigration status is, but the Boston Herald has reported that the President’s uncle does have a social security card or a Massachusetts driver’s license. Val Krishtal, the arresting officer in the case, has said Onyango Obama had red and glassy eyes, slurred speech and appeared unsteady on his feet, as reported by Channel 6 news. Police said Onyango Obama also failed several field sobriety tests and blew a reading of 0.14 …

Car Crashes into Harwich, MA Church- Driver Charged with OUI (02-5-11)

EAST HARWICH – A Dennis woman, whose car crashed into a church early Sunday morning, now faces a charge of drunken driving, according to Harwich police. Lauren DeAngelis, 23, will be summonsed to Orleans District Court to face charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, operating negligently so as to endanger and failure to stay within marked lanes following the incident that totaled her car and extensively damaged St. Peter’s Church on Route 137. A preliminary investigation by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Crash Reconstruction Team indicates DeAngelis, who was not wearing her seat belt at the time, was heading south on Route 137 near Field House Lane when her car left the road around 3 am Sunday. It traveled approximately 335 feet striking a couple of cement pylons, passing between a telephone and guy wire, over some brush and hitting a tree before crashing into the basement of the church, according to police. The force of the vehicle bent a lally column and steel I-beam, which was supporting the second floor, according to investigators from the reconstruction team, said Harwich Police Officer Aram Goshgarian. Harwich firefighters arriving at the scene found DeAngelis crawling out of the rubble of the building. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital , where she was treated and released, Goshgarian said. Due to the damage, the church held Sunday services at the Harwich Community Center capecodonline.com
